Better late than never!! Happy New Year everyone!! 🎊 We're enjoying these slower months so much so that we've been avoiding Instagram 😅 But we've taken a moment to reflect on how truly amazing 2024 was ✨ Some highlights - learning Katazome indigo dyeing in Japan, teaching my first indigo class!, saying goodbye to our Suzukini 🚗, building our first high tunnel!, growing lots of great things in said high tunnel 🌷, starting our monthly Sashiko Club!, big family visit in July, harvesting tons and tons of beautiful veggies with a beautiful crew!, dyeing with summer flowers, spinning my first skein of yarn, watching a bronze pour 🗿, holding our very last Holiday Market!, eating lots of good food and of course cuddling with fuzzy four legged creatures 🐱 We hope everyone had a fantastic holiday and welcomed the new year with joy and excitement for what's to come in 2025! 💙

Happy solstice! The shortest day of the year ✨ We don't typically harvest this late in the season but there was too much good stuff left in the tunnels that we got them harvested for our awesome friends @deadhorsehill 🎠 before the forecasted 4F/-15C night tomorrow! This past week, I (Yoko) went to the NEVF conference for the first time in a long time and was pleasantly surprised by how much better it's gotten! (=more organic/no-till/flower/small-scale content than 9 years ago) and it was awesome to meet in person fellow inspirational growers that we've been following for a long time @edibleuprisingfarm @rootsfamilyfarm @lovinmamafarm (if you're not already, you should give them a follow 💛). I forgot to take photos at the conference but I do have some slides.. and the last photo is for people who've missed our fuzzy monster Zumi 😸

Happy solstice! The shortest day of the year ✨ We don't typically harvest this late in the season but there was too much good stuff left in the tunnels that we got them harvested for our awesome friends @deadhorsehill 🎠 before the forecasted 4F/-15C night tomorrow! We made a thing - again! We call it "The Elixir" and it has elderberries, aronia berries and wild grapes! Maybe the world's first?? Both your palette and body will thank you 💜 Alex has also made a bunch of these hot pepper chains which are perfect gifts, but come to think of it, wouldn't it look great as an ornament too? 🌲 Zumi approves 😋 These and veggies, meat, ceramics, paintings, candles, cider products, yarn, bread, pastries, wreaths, jewelry and much more will be available at the Holiday Market this Saturday, 11-3pm ✨✨✨

Happy Thanksgiving! 🦃✨ The timing of Thanksgiving could not be more perfect - when we're just about wrapping up the season and there are so many things to be thankful for! (not to mention the surge in demand for local produce to finish the season strong! 😊) Well, we are very relieved we made it through another season (feels like there are more bullets to dodge every year...) but we couldn't have done it without our fantastic crew - Aichan, Taylor and Ellen - who brought a lot of positive energy and laughter to what often are long, tiring days! We are so thankful for their commitment and hard work 💪 and our customers and the wider community for supporting us and eating local!

Tomorrow is our last farmstand of the season! 🥳 We've set aside a good amount of our red carrots and we harvested a lot of everything - spinach, arugula, lettuce heads, lettuce mix, radicchio, herbs etc. - most of which will last at least a few weeks in your fridge ✨ Plus root crops that'll last you through the winter! Hope to see you tomorrow~ 🙌 (I had to include my nephew's Japanese homework that talks about visiting our farm and eating tons of delicious tomatoes, which melts my heart 🥰🍅)

I know we desperately need rain after months of dry weather but.... does it really have to be tomorrow at our last @brooklinefarmersmarket with 18mph winds? 😅 Well, Alex, Yukiko and I will be there rain or shine with the freshest veggies! 🥬 One thing the dry weather has been good for is the best head lettuce we've grown for our last outdoor planting! Our lettuce mix is well known for lasting weeks in the fridge but here's a secret.. our lettuce heads last even longer ✨ So bring an umbrella and come on out to get your locally grown ingredients for your Thanksgiving table! 🦃

It here! 🚨🚨🚨 The thing we get asked about throughout the season and possibly our farm's most iconic, famous vegetable ❤️ Alex wrote a great piece about them in this week's newsletter so I'm going to paste it here ➡️ For the uninitiated, we grow an heirloom variety of red carrots from Japan known as Kintoki carrots and we are not being hyperbolic when we say that they are THE best carrots! They're sweeter than orange carrots with a more intense carrot flavor, a more delicate texture (perfect for raw snacking), and a gorgeous scarlet red color. Like many heirloom vegetables, they're a bit more challenging to grow (as in they will only grow in cool weather) and often are very diverse in size, but we sort and bag to keep them grouped by size for ease of cooking and processing. Customers start asking us about the red carrots starting in May and thus they are sure to go fast at the market, but we planted more than ever this season and will have them for the remaining four markets, so if you miss out this week don't fret, there will be other opportunities!!!

Since our indoor space is limited, we always plant ginger on the shoulder of another crop - this season we planted them next to cucumbers and snap peas ✨ The last of them came out today! We cover crop throughout the season but we're pushing hard to get the last of them in the ground 🌱 Just in the past week we've seeded over 20 beds, which means we've now cover cropped well over 100 beds this season ✨ It's one of the most satisfying tasks on the farm - to know that these beds have been tucked in for the winter! Because it's been very dry (not complaining!) we are watering in every bed and we've had to reassemble some sprinkler lines that we put away last week! 🚿🚿🚿

It's that time of year when we have sooo many green peppers because many of our peppers don't have enough time to turn color! 🫑🫑🫑 Starting tomorrow we'll have oodles of green peppers and bulk bags available so please help us get through our huge pile... ☺️ It's one of the few vegetables you don't need to blanch before freezing so it's really easy to preserve for eating all winter long! It is a bit wet after thawing but drain & pat to dry if you don't want the excess moisture ✨

A new to us crop this year! Frisée (a kind of endive) and escarole ✨ There's a slight bitterness as expected with chicory but there's a lot of flavor! Also the latest cabbage planting might have been one of the most productive, 500lbs in a 100' bed...! 😳 We've also been having a relatively pest free napa cabbage year (literally everything loves napa cabbage, as growers know ..) but after celebrating our "cleanest napa ever!" planting, we started seeing an otherwise innocuous pest on them.. crickets!! Who knew! 😂

These pictures really don't do it justice but the fall colors that surround us on the farm are stunning!! 🍂🧡🤎💛 We're preparing for our first frost tomorrow night but we feel that the veggies have been eased into it (there was ice on our lettuce this morning!) so hopefully all the cold hardy stuff will come out the other end just tasting sweeter 😍 Speaking of cold hardy, we started harvesting our fave - Sweet & Spicy Mix today (first pic)! They're a fall exclusive crop and will hopefully be around til the end! ✨ Also, last week for basil!

October 6th. Taking a moment to record just how phenomenal our tomato crop is/was this year! Tomorrow these tomatoes are going to be taken out and replaced with the last of the fall greens. Also in our second year of using the Qplir trellising system + wickets, we can't say enough good things about them. One of the biggest benefits is that all of the ripe tomatoes are all at the same height, which makes harvesting SO much faster. And check out the tops of the tomato plants, they're still so thick! Normally we'd happily remove sad, diseased tomato plants at the end of the season but we might actually miss them this year... 🍅❤️

It's a bit of a bummer harvesting so much for what looks to be a rainy market but we'll just hope that folks brave the rain tomorrow @brooklinefarmersmarket !! 🌂🌈 Lots happening on the farm this week with the first couple of beds of tomatoes being replaced with fall greens 🥬 We've never taken down such good looking tomatoes 😆

The weather might be dreary these days but we've got all the colors to cheer you up! This week we started harvesting the delectable shungiku greens too! 💚 So here's a funny story to go down Assawaga history... In classic Yoko fashion, she placed her phone on the rear bumper of the van after packing up at the market yesterday thinking, "just for a quick second"... Half an hour later on the highway, the van suddenly says "phone disconnected", at which point Yoko realized her phone was still on the rear bumper.. 🤣 Went home and confirmed through Find My Phone that it's lost somewhere on the Mass Pike! 👋🏼 It's amazing it stayed on there for that long though...!

Snaps from today! 📸 Harvesting fleeting summer veggies 🍅🍆 It's been a phenomenal year for eggplants but they're almost coming to an end and ever since we topped all of the tomato plants for quicker ripening, the cherry tomatoes have been going bananas! We started on the second cutting of indigo, harvested one of the biggest outdoor ginger ever, and enjoyed the last swim of the season (we think 🤔)!!

Today we planted the last outdoor planting! Next week we'll start planting inside 🌱 Alex started working on our greenhouse sides that are getting a makeover ✨ Polycarbonate baseboards and automated roll up sides 🙌 Yoko's been dyeing up a storm lately to use as many flowers as possible before they're gone. These stripe prints with marigolds came out so nice! Oh, and yes we've been swimming pretty much every day for the past 10 days and it's been heavenly ☺️ Only one more warm day to enjoy the river!
